Dr. Chu of TODAY…is a Woman of Strength and Resilience and a Person of Compassion and Empathy for ALL. She LOVES her family, friends, patients, and community and most of ALL, she LOVES life itself!!! Dr. Chu appreciates every blessing that comes into her life and loves seeing her patients because they give her joy every day. Dr. Chu is committed to returning that joy to her patients through kindness, respect, and care that they all deserve.

She has been practicing Optometry in the City of Rosemead since 1995. Her practice places a high priority on eye healthcare, contact lenses, premium products and services, and exceptional patient experience.

Dr. Chu is a first-generation American-born Chinese with deep family roots in this country starting with the Transcontinental Railway in 1864. For nearly 100 years, only the men from her family traveled to the US to find work and raise their families in China. Today, Dr. Chu is proud to celebrate 160 years of the true American Dream - families sacrificing to give their next generation better and safer lives.

Dr. Chu grew up in Monterey Park and attended Brightwood Elementary and Alhambra High. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA in Psychobiology and her Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry.

During her externships, she worked with patients of diverse backgrounds while at Kaiser Permanente in Fontana and at the Optometric Center of Los Angeles located in South Central LA. She also gained experience while at the Naval Hospital and Marine Corp Recruiting Depot in San Diego where she treated both active and retired veterans and their families.

As a breast cancer survivor, Dr. Chu is keen on meeting the eye care needs of cancer patients. She can relate to many of her patients with similar experiences through empathy and compassion.

Dr. Chu is exceptionally trained and experienced in contact lens fittings. She believes in the benefits that come from all her offerings, especially with the premium daily disposables for all ages and multifocal contact lens options for patients entering their Golden Years and beyond. Dr. Chu wants every patient to Live Better by Seeing Better and Feeling Better with the most advanced technology in contact lens material, optics, and solutions.

Over recent years, she has been invited by several major contact lens manufacturers to help with professional product reviews, which have been presented in highly regarded trade publications. She is an esteemed national speaker on contact lens and specialty products; sharing her contact lens expertise with other eyecare professionals across the country. She also provides valuable insight as a consultant at national sales meetings in the contact lens industry.

She has been co-managing LASIK patients for more than 20 years. She chooses to work with only the most experienced surgeons who use state-of-the-art technology.

For fun, Dr. Chu enjoys hosting parties of any size – from 4 to 104! And interior decorating always gives her pleasure. She loves the ocean, sunsets, and sunrises. She also loves ziplining, whitewater rafting, fishing, and camping. Dr Chu has traveled extensively over the years to almost 40 countries. Some of her favorite spots are Costa Rica, India, Italy, Vietnam, and the Galapagos Islands.

Dr. Joy J. Kao

dr jengDr. Joy J. Kao received her B.S. degree in Biological Sciences and B.A. degree in English from the University of Southern California, which she attended on a Presidential scholarship. She went on to the Southern California College of Optometry (now Marshall B. Ketchum University) for her Doctor of Optometry degree. Dr. Kao completed internships at the Center for the Partially Sighted (Culver City, CA), Kaiser Permanente (Baldwin Park, CA), and the Optometric Center of Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA).

In addition to practicing primary care optometry and performing contact lens fittings for adults and pediatric patients, Dr. Kao is certified to diagnose and treat a variety of ocular diseases. She also co-manages LASIK and cataract patients with a number of experienced ophthalmologists.

Since vision is such a crucial part of our quality of life, Dr. Kao feels very fortunate to be a part of this field and loves helping to take care of her patients’ eyes. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family and friends, reading, crafting, and traveling. Dr. Kao speaks English and Mandarin Chinese.
